Catch! Post Production: Why Did It Take So Long?

By Jason Spencer - May 2, 2005

Ozark, MO - It's finally happening. Catch! and Sausagehead will make their local debuts at the Branson Meadows Cinemas on Thursday, May 5th and Sunday, May 8th in Branson, MO. This will be the PREMIERE showing of Catch! and the first public showing of Sausagehead since its Best Picture win at the Show Me Digital Film Festival in November. But as many of you Chronic Zing fans out there know, this has been a LONG road to travel. Longer than Josh and I ever intended. But there is a good explanation as to why a film with a running time of only 35 minutes takes 10 months to complete, from pre-production planning to post production master: Among other things, the infamous "other project."

Nearly all of the dialogue for Catch! was re-recorded in a studio. Why? We like to torture ourselves.

Our multitrack recording setup for Catch!. Actors watch their performances on a monitor, then lip-sync their dialogue.
In February, as Josh and I were moving toward the ADR recording phase of Catch!, we were approached by a television producer who had recently moved to Southern Missouri from Las Vegas. He was in a jam and needed writers for his newest TV pilot Cookin With Grandma. Josh and I wrote for the pilot episode: a hilarious mix of cooking, comedy and celebrities. In addition, Josh served as Talent Director and I edited the production. Unfortunately that's all I can tell you about the Grandma show until it's sold, or a short bearded man from Vegas might break my legs.

So we did a another TV pilot, but that's not all. Remember that old saying "Rome wasn't built in a day?" Well, most people have no idea what goes into making a film. It's an extremely time consuming and detail-oriented task. Actually, the Avid edit was the easy part, but the ADR (Automatic Dub Replacement) and the audio edit that followed was what took the most time. We overdub nearly all of our dialog, which takes time but it's worth it because it helps us get that classic movie sound you only get in a studio environment. It also takes time to color correct our digital footage, create visual effects, make credit rolls and titles, and master a high quality DVD to send to film festival viewings.
